Parents have powerful emotions generated through their involvement with their children, which can be both positive enablers and negative barriers.<\/p>\n<p>These will have wide-ranging and long-lasting influences on those young players. Parents need to look at the \u201cbig picture\u201d issues and responsibilities, and not fall into making the common mistakes which abuse this power.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Top 10 mistakes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Taking their child\u2019s sport experience too seriously, and not mixing in the appropriate levels of fun and recreation.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Expecting perfection in their child.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Living vicariously \u2013 as though they were taking part themselves \u2013 through their child\u2019s sport experiences.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Making negative comments about other children, parents or coaches.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Having an unrealistically overblown assessment of their child\u2019s talent.<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Contradicting the advice and guidance of their child\u2019s teachers, trainers and coaches, leading to the child being confused and torn in loyalties.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Failing to realise when their child is developing their skills rather than being competitive.<\/p>\n<p>8.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <strong>Failing to see the value of sports lessons as preparation for life itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>9.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Not realising that their child can learn valuable sport and life lessons even when they lose.<\/p>\n<p>10. <strong>Labelling their child a choker or other name.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Article submitted by a parent: Parents have a big influence on the type of player their child becomes.
